Pittville Park Sensory Garden

Brief for Artwork

Pittville Park in Cheltenham has what is probably the most popular play area in Gloucestershire for children up to 12 years old, as well as aviaries containing a variety of birds and rabbits that are very popular with younger children and their families.

Between the play area and the aviaries are six large brick planters, with bench seating next to them. Volunteers from Friends of Pittville (FoP) have recently cleared these beds of rather uninteresting overgrown shrubs and are now working on a scheme to turn them into a sensory garden for children. The idea is to introduce appropriate planting and signage but at the same time make them fun and interesting for children. Each bed will be planted to represent one of the senses. FoP would like to include artwork/signage, which could either take the form of five smaller individual artworks/sculptures related to the sense within each bed or a larger single item in one of the beds expressing all of the senses.

Phase 1 – £700 budget selected artist’s initial fee

Phase 2 – £5000+ final artwork and installation (expected, after fundraising by Friends of Pittville)

Send an expression of interest on 1 A4 sheet setting out your idea and a direction you would see it take. A simple scheme and an initial idea which could be the final idea. The artist selected will then receive the phase 1 fee for working up the idea into a practical fully-costed proposal for making and installing the artwork/s. Funding for the realisation of the proposal will then be raised by FoP to support phase 2.  Please Include some samples of current work

Deadline for initial ideas: 30 September
