Philippa Macarthur

I’m a bit of a magpie and collect natural objects (seedpods, twigs, stones) and gather discarded pieces of old metal on my walks, as well as looking down the microscope on my I-phone and collecting old tools, whose function I don’t know.

My work relates to two major themes: Repetitions and patterns of minute components found in nature, which leads to movement. This links with another preoccupation – individuals, whether people or mechanical components, only has meaning in context, in relationship to others.

Literally ‘the whole is more than the sum of its’parts’, taken from Gestalt theory. Both themes can be discerned in my work somewhere!

My work has been exhibited and sold in Garden Sculpture shows across the South, Southwest and Wales. I am a member of the Oxford Sculpture Association and the Cotswold Sculptors Association. In 2015 I was shortlisted for the Friends of the Garden Bursery Award 2020. My work was selected for the 168th Annual Exhibition at the RWA in Bristol and I was awarded the Minerva Prize for a piece in the Bath Society of Artists Annual Open Exhibition.
