Tim John Wells

I am a self-taught sculptor, born in London and now based in Swindon, Wiltshire.

My sculpting career started in a moment of clarity when I visualised the unlimited potential of a single universal form mated with the diversity of wood.  Taking time out to explore the medium fully confirmed that this would be a life-long journey.

I work exclusively in sustainably sourced wood, typically discarded.  Usually, the most unlikely of types providing the most interesting of outcomes.

The Head form is my focal point for creativity – instantly recognisable and able to evoke a deep subconscious response.  Always seeking to uncover personality, character and soul through abstract representation.

I take a minimalist approach to planning, preferring form to be discovered and emergent. I embrace mistakes and imperfections alike.  Once a glimpse of the potential is offered the outcome only then becomes crystalised.  Fulfilment is then sensed – through the very act of creation and being present during emergence.

I’m passionate about how my work should be experienced.  I think it necessary for a piece to be held and engaged fully even at risk of incident.  Only then is their opportunity to make a personal connection – the observer becomes a participant.

‘Ten Heads’ is the culmination of 18 months of discovery and represents reflections of our inner-selves.  The project has also seeded the ideas for many that will follow.
