Mark Bowman
After studying and working as an architectural technologist, I have managed a wide range of construction projects across the UK.
A fascination for the natural environment, a constant preoccupation with sculptural form and a passion for working with a wide variety of materials, have all had a considerable influence on my creative work. They’ve also been the driving force behind my diverse experimentation.
I have no formal art training but have taught myself to carve stone and wood and a year working in an artist blacksmiths forge, added to my interest in form.
During a further eight year period working on offshore oilrigs, I found the “other worldly” environment of massive steel structure and extreme natural forces, added to my eclectic mix of influences.
Now living and working in rural Northumberland, my most recent work has seen a move away from the massive scale of my previous series of carved tree trunk furniture and I’m currently experimenting with a diverse pallet of materials including aerated concrete, laminated ply, lead, slate and sandstone.
Although I do not practice full time, my work is held in private collections in the UK, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Australia and the USA.
